Winter Skin Ready with Rodan + Fields

December 02, 2015

As soon as the cold weather comes around I hunt for skincare products that will keep my skin happy in the winter. I tend to struggle with dry skin not only due to the weather, but also due to the dry air in the environment that I work in (hospitals are sooo dry).

I was recently introduced to the product line by Rodan + Fields, a California-based skin-care line developed by dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. These two doctors also created the well-known line of Proactiv skincare products. Rodan + Fields products aim to target specific skincare problems: reduction of lines, restoration of firmness, targeting dullness and discolouration, acne, and post-acne scarring.

Rodan + Fields skincare products had their start in high-end department stores, but the founders ultimately pulled their product and went into direct selling through independent consultants. This American skincare brand has started to make their way into the Canadian market, and I was given the opportunity to give the Microdermabrasion Paste and Night Renewing Serum a try.

During the winter months my skin relies on a combination of exfoliants, serums, and creams to stay soft and hydrated. The Rodan + Fields Microdermabrasion Paste is formulated with a mix of salt and sugar crystals, vitamin C, and vitamin E. The consistency is similar to most scrubs, but the formula has an oily base which allows it to glide smoothly on the skin. The company recommends using the scrub on dry skin, but I felt that was too intense and added a small amount of water. After massaging for one minute, my skin was incredibly smooth and hydrated! You don't need to use a lot of paste to get nice results, and I would probably stick to using this product once a week (compared to their recommendation of 1-3 times per week).

The serum comes packaged in individual capsules, and is formulated with a blend of peptides and retinol to visibly improve skin texture, firmness and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The serum is quite different from those I've used in the past, as it is less of a liquid and is very lightweight. This is likely due to the presence of silicone the formula. As I had only one sample I cannot speak to the long-term promises of the serum, but I did feel that my skin was very smooth the morning after!

While Rodan + Fields products are on the pricier side, the combination of the Microdermabrasion Paste and Night Renewal serum can act as as a budget friendly mini facial at home. If you're interested in the products, get in touch with Edmonton-based consultant Bianca!

Aveeno

Aveeno Active Naturals Fresh Essentials

March 09, 2015

Growing up, my mom used Aveeno products on my skin exclusively. She swore by it. I never had any common childhood skin conditions like rashes or eczema, and she attributes it to the daily use of Aveeno's oatmeal based product line.

Throughout my elementary years, I remember using Aveeno on the daily, slathering it over my cheeks, hands and arms after every shower and bath. I always wanted to try out my mom's 'cool' products with beautiful packaging (she used Shesheido for herself), and after denying me multiple times, she took one of her gold & white Shesheido containers and put the Aveeno moisturizer in there for me to use. I was a happy camper with my so-called 'grown up' cream.

Junior high was a time in makeup experimentation and my parents allowing me to go to the mall independently. I said goodbye to Aveeno and started trying out higher-end makeup and skincare products, and to this day I haven't turned back. So when I was asked to give the new Aveeno Fresh Essentials product line a try, it was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for me.

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Exfoliating Scrub

The line of Fresh Essential products boasts to replenish moisture to stressed skin by using Southernwood extract and vitamins A, C and E. There are many causes of stress in our lives, from poor diets and sun exposure, to a lack of sleep and a busy lifestyle. These tiny stressors definitely build up and cause damage to your beautiful skin, making it look dehydrated and dull. This is what Aveeno's products are designed to combat.

The Fresh Essentials product lineup includes a nourishing moisturizer with SPF 30, a hydrating night cream and an exfoliating scrub. I tested out the products for a month and generally enjoyed the results, so lets take some time to talk about each one.

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Nourishing Moisturizer SPF 30

The Daily Exfoliating Scrub (photo above) promises to reveal fresher-looking, smoother skin with each use. Luffa and coconut pulp are two natural ingredients that make up the scrub, and it really feels like a micro-exfoliant when used on the face. The tiny particles lightly polish away at the skin to make it feel incredibly smooth afterwards. I'm not a daily exfoliating type of person, so I used this twice a week and found my skin to be less prone to dry spots.

Aveeno recommends using the Nourishing Moisturizer with SPF 30 to follow your daily facial scrub. The formula is quite lightweight and quickly absorbs into the skin, giving a soft, smooth result. The product didn't make my skin overly oily, and I love that the product wasn't heavy given the higher SPF rating.

The last product in this range is the Hydrating Night Cream. This cream is designed to restore moisture to the skin while you're sleeping so that you wake up with skin that is refreshed and renewed. I actually quite enjoyed this night cream because like the daytime moisturizer, it was moisturizing without being heavy. I found that it was easy to spread, making a small amount of product go a long way.

The Aveeno Fresh Essentials product line worked really well for me, but the one thing I am not keen about is the scent. The scent is a mix between florals and fresh laundry. While I didn't mind it, I find the scent is very strong and overpowering. With each application of the moisturizer and cream, I found the scent tended to linger and took quite some time to dissipate from my skin. Given that I work in a scent-free environment, I couldn't continue using the products before heading to work. It is a pleasant scent, but if you're adverse to anything strong smells you may want to stay away from this product line. It's really unfortunate since the products work really well! Otherwise if you're still interested, the Aveeno Fresh Essentials line can be found at your local drugstore.

Winter Skin Rescue: Dr. Roebuck's

December 19, 2014

When the winter hits and the air gets drier my skin cries out for a change in products that I use on the daily. While Edmonton's winter has been fairly mild so far, I'm already experiencing some changes in my skin and am preparing for the cooler days ahead.

I recently came across Dr. Roebuck's, a popular line of skincare products from Australia. I was really interested in trying the brand out as it was founded over 30 years ago by a pair of married physicians. They were looking for products that were effective, safe, and made from all natural ingredients to use within their family and to recommend to their patients. They were unable to find a suitable product, and thus their first product was launched. Today, the Dr. Roebuck's brand is headed by the doctors' twin daughters, and they have brought the product line to the Canadian market.

Living in Edmonton, my skin is constantly battling the dry air in the winter. As a healthcare professional, the alcohol-based hand sanitizers that I use really dry out my hands - to the point where I develop rashes on the back of my hands. I wanted to see if Dr. Roebuck's Face and Bubs & Bits formula could do better than the products I currently use. Face is described as "an active ultra-hydrating night and day moisturizer with added anti-ageing ingredients to reduce wrinkles." Rosehip, vitamin E, and macadamia oil are the three essential oils in the product that promote tissue regeneration, soothing and softening of the skin, and they act as barriers to free radicals. Bubs & Bits was made as a product to soothe skin and repair any areas that require special attention. It is recommended as a post-waxing moisturizer to rehydrate skin and prevent ingrown hairs, but it can be also used for baby skin or for anyone suffering from dry skin patches, problem skin areas, or used for general day to day moisturizing.

I have tried both of these products over the last few weeks and am pretty impressed. I love the packaging of these two products. The tubs are sturdy, the colours are bold, and the descriptions are simple and straightforward. Both products carry the natural scent of lavender, which comes from the addition of lavender oil in the formula, and I find it very soothing. Both products are white in colour and thicker than your typical lotion or cream, with Bubs & Bits being the richer, stickier product of the two.

With both products a little goes a long way. When I first used the Face formula the skin on my face felt hydrated and soothed immediately after application. The following morning the dry patches on my face completely disappeared and my skin was soft and smooth after washing it. Continued use kept the dry patches away, and it never felt like the product was heavy on my skin. I decided to use the Bits & Bubs product on my awfully dry hands just to see how intensive the formula was. The formula is quite thick and sticky and leaves a bit of a film behind which takes a few minutes to soak into the skin. I chose to use the product on my hands once daily right before bed, which is when I have time to sit and just allow the product to soak into my skin. Once it was fully absorbed my hands felt smooth and moisturized, and within 3 days the dry patches on my skin had healed and I was left with hydrated, supple skin.

I'm glad to have found this line of products made with natural ingredients that works so well to soothe and moisturize skin. Based on the results I achieved I will definitely be using them routinely to treat all of my dry skin issues. Out of curiosity I would love to find out how well this would work for someone with eczema or extremely sensitive skin. If I find out I'll definitely let you know! And if you're looking for a new product to add into your winter skincare routine, definitely check out Dr. Roebuck's! Although it has just recently been introduced in Canada, it is now available via Murale and some Shoppers Drug Mart locations.

Makeup Monday: Sephora Collection Dark Spot Minimizing Serum

October 21, 2013

Everywhere I go, I get complimented on my skin. It's all the old Asian ladies telling me I have a great complexion and they ask me what beauty products I use. But contrary to popular belief, I do get dry skin in the winter time, and I get the occasional breakouts. It's all about finding what products work for you and sticking to them. Recently, I've been having breakouts around my mouth and chin, and unfortunately it's left me with dark spots that don't fare well for my self esteem.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for natural beauty, but deep down I think all of us girls have some insecurities about our skin and this is mine. Dark spots and scarring. So I did a bit of research to see what was out there, and went through numerous user reviews for different products on the Sephora website. I wanted to find a product that people reported worked for them, but I also didn't want to pay the huge price tag for something that may not potentially work for me. Here's where the Sephora Collection Dark Spot Minimizing Serum comes in.

For me, I've had some great results with the Sephora Collection skincare line, and this serum looked pretty promising after reading some reviews. For $24 CAD, I was getting a decent amount of product without having to pay the $50+ price tag that many dark spot correcting formulations have attached to them. Looking at the applicator, it's pretty simple. Squeeze the tube to dispense the amount of product that you want from the smooth side, apply, and flip it over to utilize the 'exfoliating' side to rub the product into your trouble spots. What I love most is that the applicator can turn 180 degrees so that you can close off the dispenser to ensure no product comes out while you're rubbing it into your skin. Genius!

The product itself is a creamy fluid with a a fresh scent similar to the rest of the Sephora Collection skincare line. I've been using this product twice a day for about 3 weeks now, and I can say that it has made some difference in my dark spots! My spots haven't completely disappeared, but they are much lighter and I think they will continue to lighten with prolonged use. However, I don't think I can attribute the improvement to this product alone. We shed our skin, I use exfoliating face washes, and our bodies naturally heal themselves. This dark spot serum definitely sped up the process though, so I can't wait to see further results :)

Benefit

Benefit Cosmetics Total Moisture Facial Cream

October 31, 2012

Skincare, skincare, skincare. With the transition to fall and the cooler weather, and combined with the stress of school, there have been huge changes to my skin - mainly dryness, so if you know me well, I always look to find new skincare products to combat my issues.

I've had the Benefit Cosmetics Total Moisture Facial Cream in my arsenal of products for some time now, but never got around to trying it out. I've been pretty happy with the other products I've tried from their B. Right skincare range, and figured this one should probably perform pretty well.

Like all the other packing in the line, the container is composed of glass making it heavy, but definitely durable. However, I would be wary of knocking it off the counter, as I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be able to withstand that type of a fall without shattering. The jar of cream features a faux-cork look, and removing the lid reveals a covering to keep the cream clean and from drying out.

The product itself isn't light or watery, but it isn't thick enough for me to consider it as a cream. I would probably classify it as a lightweight cream, which is nice for use throughout the day because I'm not looking for anything too heavy. The only real downfall for me is that like the other products in the line, this carries that fresh fragrance that is a little bit too strong for my liking.

Application of the cream is a breeze and it absorbs so well into the skin. It is very hydrating, and can even double up as a nice night cream if you utilize a heavier amount. My skin in the morning is brighter as well, which is an added bonus! I would recommend this for normal to dry skin, as it is quite hydrating. If you're on the oilier side, I'd stay away just because the intense moisture plus oiliness might translate to the skin being oilier after use.

I'll be adding this one into my winter regimen this year. Anyone else tried this cream before? Let me know your thoughts!

Caudalie

Caudalie Vinoperfect Enzymatic Peel Mask

September 12, 2012

If I could label myself as something in the world of makeup and beauty products.. I'd probably be a self-proclaimed skincare junkie. I have a huge arsenal of products, and continue to buy and hoard despite probably having a supply of products that will probably last me for the next five years. It's a disease, I tell you.

Caudalie is one of those big brands out there that charge a lot more money for their products. While I've purchased many of the anti-aging products for my mom before (she loves them), I've never actually used any for myself, questioning whether the higher price tag really gives you a better product for your skin. As you can see on the package, Caudalie derives its skincare products from grapes, taking advantage of the the anti-oxidant properties of grape seed polyphenols, anti-aging properties of Resveratrol, and Viniferine for brightening and spot correction. The team behind Caudalie consistently strives towards producing natural products for the skincare range, and all products are paraben-free.

I received the Vinoperfect Enzymatic Peel Mask as a sample, and put it to the test. After use, the mask promises a clear complexion, tightened pores, and an immediate burst of radiance. I was actually quite surprised by this mask, as the mention of peeling made me imagine it would sting a bit. Surprisingly enough, the thick consistency of the product makes it similar to a cream, and absorbs/disappears right into skin upon application. The product is so gentle, and there is little to no feeling of it being applied.

After ten minutes, the product has dried into the skin and is ready to be rinsed off. My skin was very soft, brighter, and a little bit tighter - but not stripped of moisture. I was actually pretty surprised with the results since I didn't feel it working during the ten minute time period like a peel typically should. The product is non-irritating, and with prolonged use, the brightening effects would likely be apparent.

For the 3ml sample, I was able to get 3 good uses out of it, meaning that the $40 full sized product for 40ml will give you about 40 uses, equalling out to $1 per use. Of course it's not a full strength peel that you would get if you go to the spa, but this one soothes the skin, and is a great way to take 10 minutes to just relax and let the product do its work.

Available for purchase via Sephora and Caudalie.

Benefit

Benefit Cosmetics Triple Performing Facial Emulsion SPF 15 PA++

August 16, 2012

Over the years, I've found my skin continues to change and I'm always on the lookout for products that target my problems. For the past two years, I've found myself to have little dry spots here and there around my face.. and needless to say it's really annoying!

When Benefit released their skincare line last year, I quickly picked up a few of the products. One of them happened to be the Triple Performing Facial Emulsion with SPF 15 PA++ protection.

I was mostly intrigued by this product because it is an emulsion - a product that you do not commonly see in the North American market, but very frequent over in Asia. For those of you new to emulsions, they are basically very lightweight moisturizers, with a watery consistency (although not necessarily meaning they are runny). Benefit's version is very lightweight with a watery consistency, making it easy to apply and is instantly absorbed by the skin, drying to a semi-matte finish.

The inclusion of SPF protection in the product is great, but definitely isn't enough to protect your skin adequately in the summertime. But in the end, the product does what it intends to do, and keeps my face free of little dry spots. If you have really dry skin though, this may not be the product for you as it isn't intensely hydrating due to the lightweight formula. For my combination skin, I'm left with a moisturized face, and don't feel oily throughout the day.

As for the packaging, you'll notice it comes housed in a glass bottle with a pump dispenser. The bottle itself is fairly heavy, and if you are clumsy and drop the bottle, it is more than likely to completely smash. What I do appreciate though, is the pump dispenser which keeps the product clean and is much more hygienic than tubs of moisturizer that you have to dip your fingers into.

My biggest problem with this product isn't the performance of the emulsion itself, but rather the scent. It is a very strong, floral/shampoo like smell, and takes a while to dissipate. Those of you sensitive to smells may find your noses absolutely against it, but it doesn't affect the moisturizing properties at all. In the end, it is a nice, lightweight moisturizer that has sun protection, and leaves the skin feeling smooth without added greasiness throughout the day.

Anyone tried this product out yet?

Cleanser

Murad Clarifying Cleanser

June 16, 2012

For the last couple years of my life, I would just use whatever cleanser I could find to wash my face in the morning. It didn't matter what was going onto my face. This was my mindset: I wash my face really well the night before, and the only place my face is going to be throughout the night is on my pillow. Nothing dirty will be on my face, so why do I need to use anything specific to clean it in the morning?

All was well, until I started to use a cleanser I got as a deluxe sample from Sephora: The Murad Clarifying Cleanser. During the friends & family event, I was given the chance to redeem a 4.5 oz. size sample for 100 points. Such a good deal! So really, it didn't matter to me whether or not I would like the cleanser, since it was just going to wash my face in the morning.

But now, I've grown to like it so much that I think I'm going to continue using this cleanser forever and ever and ever. Yes, I'm feeling pretty committed. I used it for the entire duration of my trip in Asia, and give it a big thumbs up!

The active ingredient in this cleanser is one we all know too well - salicylic acid at a 1.5% concentration. The cleanser is targetted for the treatment of acne, and while I don't have that, I'll normally have a breakout here and there. Since the beginning of it's usage in my morning routine, I haven't noticed any breakouts at all - awesome!

This particular cleanser is clear, and runs on the more liquid side of things. It carries a slight scent.. I'd say somewhat herbal, but refreshing at the same time with citrus notes so I don't mind it at all. I don't want to scare you with the word herbal, but when I think of herbal, I picture that gross chinese medicine soup.. this cleanser is NOT that type of herbal. Otherwise I'd run in the other direction and you'd never see me again.

I honestly use the smallest amount, and once it touches water it lathers up quite nicely and glides across your face. I think I use 1/3 of a pea sized amount and it's more than enough for me. It's been over 2 months of using it, and I'd say I've gone through 1/5 of the tube - I feel like it's going to last me forever. The cleanser leaves your face feeling clean, but not stripped - I hate when cleaners make you feel all dry. For me, the cleanser is soothing, giving my skin an almost cooling sensation. I love washing my skin in the morning! If you're looking for a new morning cleanser, I highly recommend this one :)

Mask

Skin Food Black Sesame Hot Mask

May 02, 2012

I want to share with you guys one of my favourite face masks of all time! Skin Food is a Korean company that specializes in making tons of skincare products revolved around food items. The black sesame masks is one of my favourites because it does so many things for me: exfoliates dead skin, brightens the complexion, and gets the circulation flowing in my face.

Any of you guys actually like eating black sesame? My mother LOVES having the black sesame dessert soup - it's essentially ground up black sesame suspended in a sweet soup. Black sesame has many health benefits, such as being a great source of calcium & vit. B1, but Asians love eating black sesame because it's a natural way to get your grey hairs back to black. Crazy, huh?

I myself have never been a fan of black sesame, but I'll take a couple sips of the dessert soup from time to time if I must. This black sesame mask essentially reminds me of the dessert soup, except in a highly concentrated form. The packaging is made of a thick, durable plastic, and the mask is kept clean with a secondary removable lid. The packaging keeps the product clean, and prevents it from drying out so you're able to use it for a long time to come.

As stated, the mask is a thick, gooey paste composed mostly of black sesame seeds and sugar crystals. What makes it unique, is that it heats up when you apply it! The thickness of the mask requires some effort to apply, but it forces you to work at spreading it out evenly, so as to get the circulation going in your face. While this happens, you start to feel a heating sensation where you apply, but don't worry, you won't burn yourself or anything ;)

After giving yourself a mini spa experience, allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes before washing it off, and utilizing the sugar and sesame pieces to exfoliate your skin! This mask is such a nice all in one product! But here comes the bad: I can imagine some people being turned off by the smell. Unlike the dessert soup, this does not smell as sweet. It comes to me as a mix of sesame, peanut butter, and dirt.. not always the most appetizing, but the smell quickly dissipates after application.

Although thick and aesthetically unappealing, this mask gives me glowing bright skin after use! Not to mention my skin is baby soft because it acts as an exfoliant as well. This mask gets a thumbs up from me, and I use it about once a week :) The product can be purchased through SaSa, YesStyle, and eBay (but beware of fakes!).

Sephora VIB Chic Week

March 28, 2012

It's that time of year again.. For the week of March 29 - April 6, Sephora is offering their VIB members 15% off their entire purchase. I seriously live for the 15% off, haha.

I've been really good lately though - I cleaned through most of my makeup over the past two days to find out what I need and what I really need to finish using! So, with the 15% discount, I'm going to be using it to buy *essentials* or back ups of things I love to use. Gonna spend wisely this time! Here's a little peek at some of the things I'm picking up:

I'm a huge fan of the Sephora Skincare range, so I wanted to try out two other items they have. The pantone collection they have right now is gorgeous too! I swatched the blushes in store the other day and they're extremely pigmented and flattering on the skin. And well.. I just love Benefit :)

If you're not part of the VIB program, find a friend who is! Their discount can be shared on March 29 only!

What are you guys planning to pick up?

Canadian

GlossyBox Comes to Canada!

March 20, 2012

A couple weeks ago, it came to my attention that another beauty box was being made available in Canada. Glossybox was founded in Germany and has been available within Europe for quite some time now, and they've now moved into the Canadian market! Just a couple notes that their public relations team sent to me:

Founded in Germany, GLOSSYBOX is a monthly subscription beauty service that is revolutionizing beauty regimes across the world. Each month members receive five luxury cosmetics wrapped in the company’s signature powder-pink box. GLOSSYBOX provides its clients with new beauty trends and products and a fashionable way to store their ever-growing beauty collection. After great success in eight countries such as the United Kingdom, France and Italy, GLOSSYBOX is expanding into another twenty countries in 2012.

Global success story, GLOSSYBOX, is making its Canadian debut. Every month members will enjoy a sophisticated 5-item luxury box packed with a selection of beauty miniatures from boutique, medical and high-end collections, as well as those tried-tested-and-true favourite beauty brands. To keep the experience truly exciting, a wildcard surprise item could show up in the box at any time. The GLOSSYBOX goal is to share insider know-how and save consumers from
tough and costly decisions by sending the best cosmetic and beauty products right to the members’ door for only $15 a month. GLOSSYBOX invites members online to create a personal beauty profile. This ensures that the items in the box will be tailored to the individual’s needs or an introduction to new trends, and quality cosmetic and beauty products.

-----------------------------

The company was kind enough to send me the first edition of their Glossybox for the month of February, and I was quite impressed with what I found.

The box was shipped to me in a sturdy box, decorated with the symbolic Glossybox crown. Opening it up, there was the pale pink box sitting perfectly. The box itself is very sturdy, and I love that it is decorated with just one small, simple logo. Because it isn't loudly decorated with the company name, I can easily use it to hold my trinkets from around the house.

Similarly to the other boxes like Glymm and Loose Button, the products inside are cushioned by paper confetti pieces, wrapped in tissue and wrapped with a beautiful bow. Lots of care and attention is put into the presentation, making it all the more fun to open.

In the box this month was: Ahava Mineral Hand Cream, Elizabeth Grant Skin Care Moisturizing Stick, Essie lacquer in Neo Whimsical, Oscar de la Renta Live in Love body lotion, Elizabeth Arden Prevage Night Cream, and Beauty So Clean Sanitizing Mist & Wipes. First of all, let me just say the value of the products in the box this month well exceeds the $15 subscription price. What I love is that all the products in the box are not shade specific (according to skin tones), and I'll be able to try everything out. The brands offered by Glossybox are mostly different from those supplied in other boxes, and it feels like their products are received from higher end companies. What I'm most excited to try out is the Beauty So Clean products - perfect for my upcoming trip this summer!

Like other companies, the box contains little notes about the products, application tips, and even little sticker labels that you can use on different boxes. Currently, Glossybox does not sell the full sizes of the sample items you receive, but the website contains pricing and purchase information if you love the product and want to purchase it. It seems that the boxes are sent out expedited via Canada Post, which includes tracking information so you can estimate when to receive your box each month - I love when prices include shipping.

Now what good is a company if you don't get rewarded? Glossybox has a great reward system for subscribers! After trying out a product, leaving a review gets you 20 GLOSSYdots, and accumulation up to 1000 gives you a free box! If you refer a friend to the program, you gain 200 points. Definitely better than nothing!

So what are you waiting for? With a $15/month subscription fee, the subscription is automatically renewed each month, but can be cancelled at any time, free of charge. I will put this out there right now: I have ended my subscription with Glymm and am planning on picking out a new subscription service - so far, Glossybox is looking pretty good in my books. Sign up here with my personal referral link. **UPDATE** Readers of this blog can enter the code GLOSSY24 to receive 10% off your first box!

I will be doing individual reviews for each product - coming soon!

GLOSSYBOX also provides the latest information and the best in beauty tips and tricks from around the world on:
Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and the GLOSSYTHOUGHTS blog
