Manicure Monday: Teal the Tide Turns

March 17, 2014

Happy Monday! Or shall I say Happy Green Beer Day? I'm not a huge fan of St. Patrick's day (especially after my elementary school teacher made us clean up the mess that the "leprechaun" left behind), but I'll definitely sport a bit of green to avoid being pinched!

So the green for me today is Teal the Tide Turns from the China Glaze Sea Goddess collection for Spring 2014. Like its counterparts Tail Me Something and Wish on a Starfish, this polish is textured and chock full of sparkles. Two coats of polish doesn't reach full opacity and it actually has a bit of a shiny finish. If you look closely, it's almost as if there's less of the textured material which gives this polish a glossy look. The texture is same as the other two, but I like the finish of this one better. The formula is easy to work with and surprisingly really easy to remove, so definitely pick this one up if you like the colour! Available via Nail Polish Canada.

Manicure Monday: Tail Me Something

March 03, 2014

Happy Monday! I'm back from a relaxing (albeit REALLY cold) weekend in the mountains and am refreshed and ready to go! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and maybe caught some of the Oscars? Ellen was great!

This week on my tips I have another shade from the China Glaze Sea Goddess collection for Spring 2014. Like Wish on a Starfish, this purple shade is textured and chock full of small glitters. At two coats of polish, the formula gains opacity and dries quickly to a sparkly finish. However, this polish chipped within 2 days and I had lost quite a bit of my manicure come day 4. So unfortunately, this polish doesn't stand the test of time but the colour and finish are beautiful!

Manicure Monday: Wish on a Starfish

February 24, 2014

Happy Monday! Anyone else sad that the Winter Olympics are over? Last night I thought to myself... "what on earth am I going to do in class now?" Hah, I promise I'm actually an awesome student. But in all seriousness, I'm SO proud of the Canadian athletes and their performances at the games. There's no better time to show off Canadian pride!

To kick off this week, I have one of the newest shades from China Glaze to share with you today. It made it's first appearance in my Valentine's Day inspired mani, but I wanted to show it off on its own. Wish on a Starfish is one of six shades from the China Glaze Sea Goddess collection for Spring 2014. I would categorize all six as pretty Spring shades, but what is unique about them is the fact that they are all textured polishes. This was something difficult for me to get used to as I love my nail polishes to dry smooth and flat.

To me, Wish on a Starfish is a pretty bubblegum pink base loaded with small gold glitter and a textured filler. After the application of two coats, the polish dries sparkly and attains a texture similar to that of sand. I thought that the addition of a top coat may reduce the textured effect, but it actually didn't change anything and felt like the polish just completely absorbed my top coat. It's a little strange to have a finished manicure feel bumpy and rough, but it allows for an ultra sparkly finish and a long lasting manicure. I got five full days of wear with two coats, and when the polish starts to chip you hardly notice it as the sparkles fill in the gaps. It will be a great colour for the upcoming warm-weather months and available via Nail Polish Canada if you're interested.

Manicure Monday: Love-ly Tips

February 10, 2014

Happy Monday! It's been a whirlwind of a week & weekend for me having to deal with post-wisdom teeth woes. Thank goodness that's a once in a lifetime ordeal!

It's been awfully cold in Edmonton lately and I'm consistently drawn to cooler tones and darker shades to wear on my nails. But in the spirit of Saint Valentine, I've got a cute pink manicure to share with you all this week! For this particular manicure I've used OPI Pink-ing Of You, China Glaze Wish on a Starfish (swatch & review coming next week!), OPI Alpine Snow, OPI My Favorite Ornament & OPI You're Such a Kabuki Queen. Can you tell what my favourite polish brand is? *wink wink*

I'm not usually one to have themed nails, but when Nail Polish Canada asked me to create a themed manicure, I was up for the challenge. If you love this look, give me a vote here!

Manicure Monday: Re-Fresh Mint

July 23, 2012

Happy Monday! Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend :) There's so many events going on in my city right now that I was just all over the place. The local exhiition/fair is on, as is the Indy, and Taste of Edmonton - an event where local restaurants make samples of their food for you to try! You know I was all over that.. especially when some of my fellow food bloggers were competing in a cook-off! More on that later.

I'm still riding high on the mint coloured kick, and sported China Glaze's Re-Fresh Mint on my tips this week. Re-Fresh Mint is an older shade, circa 2010's Up & Away collection. But seeing as it's my favourite colour, I can never have too many mint shades.

This particular colour is a pale mint creme - definitely with more yellow in it than blue like regular mint shades, but since it is much lighter, it can appear a little chalky on certain skintones.

I always have some issues with China Glaze brushes, since they're longer and thinner than the OPI Pro-wide brush, but with some practise and patience, application isn't all that bad. The formula is a little runny, but definitely opaque after two coats. Smooth colour and full wear for up to 4 days without chips - I'm a happy camper.

What did you guys do this weekend?

Manicure Monday: Pelican Gray

March 26, 2012

Happy Monday! After the big dump of snow last week, the weather has started to warm up and now there are puddles everywhere.. I'm just glad its warm now, I want my Spring sunshine!

This week I have a colour from the China Glaze Anchor's Away Spring 2011 collection - this one is a beautiful dove gray called Pelican Gray.

For me, this shade is basically the perfect gray shade - not too blue, and not too green. It's such a perfect combination that looks great in the Spring and Summer months because it's not muddy or anything.

The colour itself is a gray creme, packed with silver microshimmer that you can really only see if you're looking under the sunlight, or if you look very closely. It just gives the polish an extra dimension that puts it above other gray cremes out there.

The formula for this polish is smooth, and quite easy to apply. The pictures show the colour at two coats, which is almost full opacity, as there is still some visible nail line under certain lighting. The polish wears beautifully for five days chip free! Love it!

Tutorial: Glitter Gradient Nails

December 22, 2011

Coming from my post yesterday, I present to you a glitter gradient tutorial for your nails, just in time for Christmas! This post was requested by lilkiddo, after seeing the design when I swatched the OPI Nice Stems collection.

So many colours can be mixed and matched to use together for this tutorial. For Christmas, a mix of red and gold, or green & white frosty tips would look amazing! The choice is up to you :) What I would recommend, however, is to use a finer glitter polish, or a shimmer polish to form the gradient. It makes it much easier to complete the design and have it look polished and chic.

Paint a layer of base coat, followed by your base colour of choice. For this tutorial, I will be using China Glaze's For Audrey

Do you guys like simple nail tutorials like this? I will definitely do more if you guys are interested! And if you try this tutorial, let me know how it turned out! Have fun :)

The Perfect Blue

December 21, 2011

If there's one shade of blue that any woman can recognize, it's Tiffany Blue. It's such a distinctive colour - I wouldn't mind finding that colour under my Christmas tree!

China Glaze produced this blue hue a while back, but I've never had the courage to whip it out for some wear. Up until the past year, I had always been a girl that loved pinks and reds. My collection has now expanded to be less colour discriminative, so here we have For Audrey.

The formula on this polish is fantastic. It flows beautifully on the nail, drying smooth and with a high shine. It is opaque within two coats, and very easy to remove. No complaints on this one - it's one of my favourite colours!

Below Deck

December 16, 2011

Hello everyone! It's been a while. I'm happy to say that I'm done with four out of my five final exams for the semester! My next isn't until Monday, so I snuck on here to do a quick post for you!

I don't own too many China Glaze nail polishes, just because I'm a big fan of the OPI formulation. I never have any issues with OPI, so I never decided to venture into other polish brands. But some of the colours offered by China Glaze are just so beautiful, so I've had a couple bottles in my posession that I've finally decided to try.

Below Deck is from the Anchor's Away collection released early this year. The nautical themed collection has a great assortment of colours, and I have a couple more that I will swatch soon :)

Below Deck is a grey mauve colour. It's almost like a mix of violet and a dark taupe tone together, to give a dusty looking purple. I never pulled this out to use until now, because it's a great darker shade for fall & winter.

The formula of the polish is fantastic, highly pigmented, and achieves full opacity at two coats. The only issue I have with China Glaze itself with shape of the brush. It's longer and slimmer than the traditional OPI Pro-wide brush that I'm used to. I had some major messy cuticles to clean up! I never make a mess with OPI, so having to adjust to the brush might prove to be a little problem.

The polish dries quickly and to a nice shine. Love it!

And just a reminder! The Tutti Frutti giveaway is still open, so don't forget to enter!
