Never Have I Experienced Anything Worse: Lazia Downtown

This past Saturday I think I found the one restaurant in Edmonton that has the worst service I have ever experienced. And as much as it pains me to say it, this restaurant was Lazia inside City Centre.

On that night, I was heading out with my friends for my birthday dinner, which had been planned 3 weeks in advance. When I was making my reservation, the man I spoke to over the phone informed me that I could have a group booking for 5:00 or 8:00 pm. The only catch was that for the 5:00 reservation, I would have to be finished dinner & out of the restaurant by 7:45. I understood that this would require following a pretty strict timeline, as the dinner rush would be during that time slot. Therefore I booked for 8:00 and the gentleman assured me that I would have my table at 8:00 pm, and that I could have all the time I wanted to dine there that night.

Fast forward three weeks, and there I am inside the restaurant at 8:00, and the hostess tells me that the table before my reservation is still at the restaurant. What happened to the whole "you must be finished and out of the restaurant at 7:45" rule that they wanted to enforce on me? I was slightly frustrated, but she said that they were asking the table to leave in order to allow my party to be seated. My friends arrived within the next 5 minutes, and we were left sitting in the little waiting area, wondering when we would be seated. Time passed, and more time passed, and soon enough, it was 9:00. We saw a large group of individuals leaving the restaurant, and the hostess told us we would have to wait a little longer in order for them to clean & set the table. Ridiculous.

We sat down at the table, and hastily ordered our food as we were STARVING. Our waitress wasn't really too efficient of a person, but I tried not to let that get to me. As we sat and waited some more, she came by with our drinks, and disappeared shortly after. Time passed again, and it was 9:35. There was still no food at our table, and I was starting to get extremely frustrated. We finally flagged down the waitress, and she came over saying she would try to get them to bring out our food as quickly as possible.

A couple minutes later, she brought out warm puffed pieces of bread to our table. It really wasn't that delicious, but at that point, any food in my mouth was good enough.

By the time 10:00 rolled around, the first plate of food finally reached our table. I swear my stomach was rejoicing and jumping around inside my body because it was so excited to receive dinner!!

I ordered the 'not your average nasi goring', which actually tasted pretty good. The dish was a spicy Indonesian fried rice, served with chicken, shrimp, red pepper, baby bok choy, and peanuts. The heat in the dish was quite mild at first, but with each successive scoop, it gradually became pretty spicy.

Vince ordered the 'Secret BBQ side ribs', served with steamed potatoes and green beans. He said that one side of the ribs was tender and juicy, but the other was dry. Weird, right? You would think it would be the same the whole way through.

For dessert, I ordered the 'Chocolate Overdose', which was a dark Callebaut chocolate mousse cake. I wanted to test the waitress, to see if she really had good customer service skills, and to see whether she would try to turn our horrible dining experience around, by asking her whether or not they do anything special for birthdays at their restaurant. To my dismay, she said that they don't and that she could try to find me a candle for my dessert.

Once the bill arrived, it REALLY got me thinking about how terrible of an experience I had at this restaurant. By booking 3 weeks in advance, being fully aware of their policies, I expected to have my table ready for me to be seated at 8:00 pm, and NOT shortly after 9:00. Secondly, why did the food take so long to arrive at the table?? Many people that were seated after us received their food and ate it before we got ours! Third of all, the waitress really wasn't attentive, and I did not have an enjoyable time at the restaurant. Now, the icing on the cake: because we had 8 guests in our party, we had to pay a mandatory 15% gratuity just to receive terrible service. Talk about worst restaurant in town. We never even received a single apology the whole time we were there, nothing. How difficult is it to say "I'm sorry this is happening, we are trying our best to get everything ready for you"? NEVER ever again will I go to this place nor recommend it to other people. No one needs to experience this type of service.

Am I being irrational? I think I have all the right to be upset with how my night turned out. So before anyone bashes me for this, put yourself in my shoes. I'm not saying that the food at this restaurant is bad, it's the service at this restaurant that makes me put this location on my blacklist. Is it too much to ask for quality service at restaurants these days?

Since the dinner took so long, my post-dinner plans had to be cancelled. One of my guests flew in from Baltimore and I wanted to make sure he could attend my dinner at a reputable restaurant. Well, their respectable reputation no longer stands in my books.

*PS - Vince was actually quite upset with how this dinner turned out, and sent a lengthy, disgruntled email to Lazia's downtown location. To this very day (January 11, 2011) we still have not received a follow-up reply. The irresponsibility of the management to follow up on this experience goes to show their quality of service. I hate this place.

Taste of Taiwan

Today after school, I was excited to try out this place I spotted not too long ago called Hong Kong Cafe. It's a little hard to spot when you're driving down 82 Avenue, but it's right next door to the Mandarin Restaurant.

I was hoping for this place to be a Hong Kong style cafe, with things like macaroni in soup, vermicelli noodles, and french toast, but boy was I wrong. Walking in through their doors, the feel wasn't quite right. The walls were bare, and there was nothing Asian-feeling about this place. They had a sheet of paper with their menu written on it, and once I saw the first thing, I was ready to leave. The first item on the menu was a hamburger! Like, what is that?! That has nothing to do with Asian cuisine if you ask me.. so out the door we went. As we left, I noticed there was a doorway in the wall, which led into the Mandarin Restaurant. Guess it's owned by the same people.. and catered to Caucasians.

Being completely frazzled, I had no idea as to where we should go to eat. We were running out of time since we had to work at six, so the only thing that came to mind was Taiwan Express! It was somewhat similar to what I had in mind, and I had been meaning to sit down and try out the food that they offer. This place has also been changing a lot in the past couple months. They've been changing their interior decor and doing renovations. Not to mention, they have also changed their name a couple times! Right now, I think they're going to take a break from all that.

When we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted by their interesting decor. The place is dimly lit, with a black & red theme, giving the impression that the owners are trying to give this place a romantic vibe. Each table also has a vase with a red carnation sitting in it. Forget the colours, I'm not convinced it's a place to go for a romantic date.. I still see it as Asian central.

As we sat down, we looked at the food menu and the various items they had to offer. It wasn't a lot, but the selection was way better than what was available at Hong Kong Cafe. We ended up ordering one bubble tea and one bowl of noodles each, and the Taiwanese crispy chicken, as per Carson's recommendation. I don't quite remember the exact name of the noodles, but I'll try my best!

I got my usual lychee green tea, but with aloe vera. Aside from Tea Bar in Chinatown, I haven't come across a bubble tea cafe that had it as an option. I love that the chunks are juicy and crisp, yum! Vince ordered the 'Sweet Kiss' whcih was a mix of taro & coconut. I've never been a big fan of the powdered, artificial tasting drinks, because they're so bad for you! Full of sugar, cream, and sweeteners, the powdered bubble teas really shouldn't be consumed on a regular basis. Good thing he gets one every 3-4 months, haha.


Crispy Chicken


The first dish to arrive was the crispy chicken. It wasn't extremely crisp to the point that the batter encased the dough so much that it wasn't flexible (think KFC popcorn chicken & chicken fingers/nuggets), but the outside had a softer crisp, and the chicken was 'flexible'. The chicken was marinated with a unique mix of spices, reminiscent of those used to season BBQ pork. It was quite yummy, but a little on the salty side. The dish remained hot even after sitting for a couple minutes, so we were able to enjoy it at our own pace instead of chowing down before the food became cold!

I ordered the Taiwan Express Soup Noodles, while Vince ordered the BBQ Duck Soup Noodles. When they arrived, the looked quite different from one another, but tasted very similar. I don't really know what exactly was in my noodles, because there were various little chunks of meat, and multiple chunks of fat mixed in. It was unbelievably oily! Without the chunks of fat, I'm sure this noodle bowl would have tasted equally as good. Thank goodness for the shredded lettuce, it helped absorb A LOT of the oil. Man, I felt like my face was drenched in oil!

One thing that I didn't really like, which has nothing to do with taste of the food, was the chopsticks that came with the bowl. They were extremely wide set on the top end, and extremely narrow on the other end, making them SO difficult to use!

Vince's duck noodle soup was different fron what I imagined it to be. I thought it would be presented like a chewy BBQ duck "lai fun" (noodles), but the noodles were relatively soft, and the broth was quite peppery, with other spices mixed in. His bowl was much less oily, but I wasn't a big fan of it's taste.

I think this place has a lot of potential to develop into a popular bubble tea place in Edmonton. The owner is very friendly, and it's a nice lounge type environment to be in to hang out with friends. There is a wide variety of board games available to play as well. The best part of this place is that they have many food options available for those who are hungry. Unlike Dream Tea House that has stopped serving hot food for well over a year now, this place definitely has a competitive edge. Check them out too, at www.taiwanbubblezone.com

Birthday Sushi : Kyoto

Lisa and I decided to go out for my birthday lunch today, and since it was warm outside, we trekked over to Kyoto on 109th!

It was the first time I had ever been to this location, and upon walking in, it felt a little smaller than I had imagined it to be. The hostess quickly greeted us and brought us to our table.

For lunch I picked out the beef tataki and tempura udon. Lisa ordered the udon as well, and avocado sushi. We were SO excited to eat! The restaurant had just opened for the day and was quite quiet, so I expected to get very good service from our waitress.

Shortly after ordering, we were given complimentary miso soup and bean sprout salad. I was surprised to get the salad, as most Japanese restaurants only give the miso soup. The soup was nicely flavoured, and not too salty. The bean sprouts were drenched with a ginger-soy (my guess!) dressing, which was refreshing, and the plump sprouts were a great way to cleanse the palate after sipping the soup!

The tataki here at kyoto is sliced very thinly, almost to the point where it is see through. Seriously! I was so shocked. The ponzu sauce was rather salty, but there was plenty of seaweed and onion on the plate that toned down the saltiness of the dish.

My tempura udon arrived nice and hot, and the broth was clear & tasty. The udon spice was served in a little pot though, so I felt it was a tiny bit unsanitary, and wished it was in the regular bottle :( Lisa and I traded tempura pieces - best deal in the world! 2 of her prawns for all my vegetables, haha!

The food was fresh and delicious, but I would have to complain about the service. There weren't too many people eating in the restaurant, yet our server hardly came to check in on us, and it was too difficult to get a hold of her in order to pay our bill! If you visit this location, be wary of the service and have patience!

One of the Best Days of the Year!

Wow, I'm so self centered on my birthday.. but who wouldn't be?
Today also marks the official day that Vince & I have been dating for 2 years. So why wouldn't this be one of the best days of the year?

This morning, my momma took me to Cora's for brunch before heading to class. I got my usual eggs benedict, and paired it with the mango banana smoothie. Delish! Love you mom :)

Tonight, Vince took me out to Sabor Divino, a fine dining restaurant downtown to celebrate my birthday & our anniversary.

The interior of the restaurant is dimly lit, providing a romantic setting in the dining room. The furnishing is somewhat rustic, and with a majority of the room made with burnished wood, it gave me a very homey feel as we sat down at the table. The cuisine here at the restaurant is described to be rich in European influence, with a contemporary flair, so I was excited to see what the menu was all about.


Bread to start


To start, we were presented with a basket of bread served with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, butter, and a side of olives. To my surprise, the bread was served cold, rather than warm like other restaurants. I found it a little odd, but I was hungry and ate anyways!

We decided to skip the appetizers, thinking we would order dessert to finish the meal instead. For the entree, I ordered the 'Magret de Canard', which is a pan-seared duck breast cooked with black trumpet mushrooms, shallots and licor Beirao, and served with risotto. When it was presented to me by our attentive waiter, I didn't really know what to expect out of the dish because it didn't seem too fancy. But what is the one word I can use to desribe this dish? Fantastic. The skin of the duck was seared to a nice crisp, while the meat beneath was tender and juicy. The sauce on the duck was a little sweet, which paired very nicely with the saltiness of the skin, albeit some parts were a little saltier than desirable.

Now for the risotto, I think it's the best I've ever had! No joke. The risotto was cooked al dente in a creamy broth with peas and a vegetable I cannot identify, and mixed with a nice blend of cheese. The best part was that the cheese didn't solidify upon cooling, which allowed the risotto to maintain its creamy consistency. Simply delicious.


Calamari & Prawns


Vince ordered the Grilled Calamari and Prawns, which I thought was weird since he wasn't being his adventurous self. But once the plate arrived, I was pleased with his decision because I wasn't afraid to eat it! The plate was cooked with Portuguese chorizo (pork sausage), bell peppers and white bean puree. The Calamari was cooked very well, having a chewy texture, but not so chewy that it required copious amounts of chewing. The prawns were large and also cooked perfectly, so we were both very happy with our meals!

After dinner, we were stumped between two of the items on the dessert menu. We wanted something different, and specific to the restaurant, so we ignored the desserts that regularly appear on menus elsewhere, like the tiramisu and cheesecake. The things that intrigued us were the 'Leite Creme Dona Irene' and the 'Chocolate Cayenne Mousse'. Dona Irene is similar to a creme brulee, and is described as a light Portuguese cream custard topped with caramelized sugar and cinnamon. I think it's the cinnamon that made us really want to try it out. On the other hand, the mousse was described as a semi-sweet chocolate mousse with a little heat. Interesting, right?

After asking for the opinion of our waiter, he suggested we try the Dona Irene, because he's a little averse to the heat from the cayenne pepper in the chocolate mousse. He said it gives his throat a bit of an uncomfortable burning sensation, haha! But that many people order it and enjoy it, making it a very popular dessert in the restaurant. Vince & I chose to go the less adventurous route, and ordered the custard.

To our surprise, our waiter brought the custard, and included a little sample of the mousse so we could get a feel for what it's like. And trust me, it's interesting. When you first put it in your mouth, it tastes just like any other chocolate mousse. But the moment after you swallow it, you start to feel a tingly sensation in your throat! It's definitely interesting, but not something I would want to experience in large amounts. Dona Irene was definitely a better choice, and tasted like a creme brulee with a sprinkle of cinnamon.


All in all, this was a great choice for dining on this very special day. I would definitely return in the future to try out some of their other offerings, as they are quite unique, and I feel that this city doesn't really have many European restaurants aside from Italian ones. Not something I think I could go for often though, it would really burn a hole in my wallet! (We paid roughly $77 for the two of us including tax & tip)

It's always so disappointing for me every year when the Sephora Friends & Family event happens around November. The Friends & Family event entitles individuals with an invite from a Sephora employee to receive 20% off their entire purchase. Now you would wonder, why exactly would I be upset if I receive 20% off? WELL, the problem is that there is a code that can be used online to receive 20% off the entire purchase, and it is available to anyone and everyone that uses the internet. But here's the catch: only people living in the USA can use it! Despite giving Canada the capability of ordering Sephora's great products, we are inelligible to use the discount. I would suggest using it only once in a while because it takes me a good 2 minutes per finger to remove every piece! But they are perfect for festive holiday nails!

Birthday Hot Pot : Lucky 649? [CLOSED]

Yesterday felt like one of the coldest days of the year! No joke. Walking outside for 10 seconds made my legs feel like they were on fire! Then they went numb and I couldn't feel them. Ridiculous.

And just my luck, my button fell off my jacket as I was walking from one class to another, so I couldn't button my peacoat up! It was so cold walking about with my arms wrapped around my body, looking like I was stealing something! Haha.

Even better. Right when I got off class, my mother called me, and was freaking out because her car wouldn't start! Being the good child that I am, I decided to meet up with her and wait it out in the cold winter weather, until the guy from AMA arrived.

After what seemed like forever, we headed home, and my mom started freaking out again! It was supposed to be my birthday dinner with my aunties that night, but because she didn't get home at 2pm like usual (we got home at 5..) she had no time to prep or cook the meal she had planned for the night. As a result, I suggested going out for hot pot (my fave!) at this place I recently saw an ad for in the local Chinese newspaper, called 649 Restaurant. They advertised all you can eat for $16.99 per person, which is very cheap compared to other placers in the city that charge $21.95 and up.

We battled the quiet roads and slippery conditions until we reached a little strip mall in the Ermineskin/Steinhauer area in the south. The restaurant looked empty, and although a little hesitant, we walked inside to be greeted by a very friendly Chinese lady. There was only one other table occupied in the dining area, and I'm not going to lie, it had me a little worried.

The Hot Pot menu consisted of 33 different items, some already cooked, and others waiting to be cooked in the broth. Despite the lack of variety, they carried the essential items that you could expect to eat at hot pot.

One thing I like about this place is that you can order any type of broth that they carry at no extra charge, unlike King's Noodle & Hot Pot which charges $7 for flavours other than satay & chicken. In addition, they provide patrons with a multitude of ingredients to create the perfect sauce for hot pot. Sauce is important!

After dining here, I heard complaints from some of my friends saying that this place was terrible. But in all honesty, I thought this place was great for the price! At $16.99, there is a trade off of price for variety, but the quality of the food and ingredients is fantastic. The vegetables are fresh, and the meat is sliced and prepared upon ordering. For a 10 minute drive away from my house, I appreciate that I don't have to drive 20+ minutes to go to Chinatown and have hot pot.

Let the Celebrating begin : Melting Pot Fondue

This year for my birthday, I had tons of plans to celebrate! Since it was my big 2-0 I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate this big milestone (Yes I know 21 is big too, but hey it was a good excuse to eat lots of good food, right??)

First up was my birthday celebration at the Melting Pot Fondue Restaurant that just opened up this summer. I had gone only for dessert before, so I was looking forward to experiencing everything they had to offer.

I called a month in advance to book my group party, and it actually was quite a lengthy process to get everything planned properly. I was required to sign documents, pre-plan the menu, and work together with the party coordinator to make sure everything would go smooth on the day of the party. In the end, everything worked out, and I was worry free!

I had chosen to go with the traditional menu, comprised of a custom 4 course menu. I was able to choose two cooking styles per course, which was a nice alternative for us to try many of the restaurants offerings. And for $36 (exclusive of tax & tip), I thought it was a steal! As we arrived, we were lead to a separate room from the rest of the restaurant, where they usually put their bigger groups. It was nice to have the area to ourselves to enjoy our dinner.

The first course was a cheese fondue, and I chose to go with the Fiesta Cheese fondue, and the Fondue a la France on their Feature Menu.

The cheese fondue was served with green apples, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, tortilla chips, and assorted breads.

Fiesta Cheese fondue was beer based, and made with cheddar cheese, Mexican herbs, spices, jalapeno peppers, and salsa. It was really interesting to see how the fondue was put together, as our waiter for the night prepared all the fondues tableside. He was very attentive, and a fantastic host for the night. I really enjoyed the flavours put together in this fondue, and the jalapeno peppers provided a nice kick in the creamy mixture.

Fondue a la France, on the other hand, was white wine based, and made using baby brie, fontina, guyere, and raclette cheese, with bacon, white truffle cream, onions and fresh chives. Of the two fondues, I didn't like this one as much, since the wine taste was quite prominent.

The second course was a salad, and we were able to choose between two options.

The first choice was a classic caesar salad composed of romaine lettuce, croutons, shredded parmesan cheese and topped with pine nuts.

The other salad was a house salad made with romaine and iceberg lettuce, topped with cheddar cheese, tomatoes, croutons and sliced egg, drizzled with our choice of peppercorn ranch, or the sweet, tangy house dressing. I ordered this one, and it was way bigger than the caesar salad! I would say maybe even double in size due to the sheer amount of toppings on the lettuce. It was also refreshing, which was great to cleanse the palate!

The third course was our entree fondue. The traditional menu allowed each person to have three large shrimp, two chicken breasts, two filet mignon cuts of beef, two pieces of teriyaki sirloin, and two pieces of cedar plank salmon. To share with each other was a bowl of vegetables, including broccoli, mushrooms and potatoes. I had chosen two different cooking styles - one the coq au vin, and the other being the mojo style. Served up with six different dipping sauces, this course was sure to please in one way or another.

Veggies


Both were clear broths, but with very different, distinct flavours. Coq au vin was a red wine base with fresh herbs, garlic, mushrooms and different spices. Everything that was cooked in it turned a faint red colour, so cute! Mojo style was a Carribean seasoned bouillon with fresh garlic and citrus. Our waiter squeezed half an orange and lime into the broth, really kicking up the intensity of the citrus flavour. I loved the Mojo style! Both broths were very flavourful, but being a little averse to wine, I was biased towards the Carribean flavour.

It was fun trying out what I like to refer to as "Caucasian hot pot", and having some idea of how long to cook the meats was definitely to my advantage. Nothing was overcooked and everything was tender, and tasted amazing with the sauces provided to us. Dipping sauces we had to try included a curry sauce, plum, teriyaki, cream cheese & chive, yogurt and a spicy sauce. Our waiter suggested we try mixing the sauces, and to create his favourite: curry sauce + teriyaki sauce to make curriyaki sauce. It was actually such a delicious sauce too!


White Chocolate Creme Brulee Fondue!


After the entree, I was STUFFED. I didn't know how I would be eating dessert with everyone else, but somehow it just happened! I had chosen to go with their Yin & Yang chocolate fondue, and the featured white chocolate creme brulee. The presentation of each fondue was beautiful, but the highlight for me was definitely the creme brulee fondue. Our waiter generously sprinkled coarse sugar atop the chocolate, and torched it!! It was amazing to watch, and the chocolate tasted so amazing and creamy with little bits of crunchy sugar here and there.


Yin & Yang Chocolate


Yin & Yang fondue was also delectable, and a nice balance between the dark and white chocolate until the boys decided to just mix it all together! The chocolate fondue was served with cheesecake, pound cake, brownies, strawberries, bananas, pineapples, and marshmallows. Everyone at each table shared one, but because I was birthday girl, I was overwhelmed to find out I was able to have one plate all to myself! So, I definitely ate the most out of anyone that night...


So many desserts to eat!


I will definitely be back to Melting Pot sometime again in the future. I don't see it being a practical place to have dinner often, as our dining time that night was three hours long, and everyone was stuffed beyond belief. It will be great to come here again in the future for a party with friends or family though. I almost can't wait until the next time I'll be back!
